Whims Insurance Agency was founded in April 1917 by a local entrepreneur, named Leslie L. Whims. Leslie was a car dealer in Rochester, and was approached by, and licensed as an agent with, Auto-Owners Insurance Company. The relationship with Auto-Owners exists to this day, with Whims being the third oldest Auto-Owners agency in the United States.

Leslie’s son-in-law, Herm Klix, joined the agency in 1963 bringing his expertise as a field underwriter for Mutual of New York. Herm’s son, Tom, joined the agency in April 1976, after graduating from Hillsdale College. Tom persuaded his sister, Connie, to join the agency after graduating from Central Michigan University in 1979. The fourth generation of the family has worked in the office, along with many other dedicated professionals.

The firm has been located in various buildings since 1917, but always on the East side of Main Street in Downtown Rochester. The Whims Insurance Agency believes in the same customer service philosophy that Grandpa Whims used almost 90 years ago:
